Adventures Of A Soap Writer

Kkrishnaa's Konfessions Kkrishnaa (she emphasises on the double 'K's and double 'A's) is the successful script writer of KSK -- Kangan Souten Ke, the top soap on SuperNova channel. An impulsive 20-something, Kkrishnaa will do anything to stay ahead in the game. She is all set to read out the script for the next few episodes to her boss Rajne. There is, however, a hitch. Kkrishnaa has a writer's bloc and Rajne knows it. Kkrishnaa, who has been politely asked to take a break, decides to spy on her neighbours in order to add more juice into her soap. She borrows a telescope from her neighbour Bhavesh (who lusts after her). The telescope -- which becomes the bane of all problems she is to encounter -- becomes a source of the sneak previews into the lives of all the rich and famous living in the posh apartments down the road. Each one has a tale to tell.

A reclusive media tycoon flags himself with a whip every night, a self-help and yoga guru indulges in orgies in his apartment, a politician has an illicit relationship with erstwhile actress in the same building, incestuous relationship between a mother and a son -- all these and more. Kkrishnaa weaves all of them into her script. Curious, she gets a brainwave and sends anonymous notes to the people in the building. The next day, while glancing through the telescope along with mercenary and one time friend, Dev, they witness a murder -- that of Mallika, a popular item girl. And the killer knows someone was watching.

The cops don't believe their story, the killer is after their lives and what's worse, her script is stolen. With myriads of plots and sub-plots, Kkrishnaa, Dev, Inspector Gaitonde and ACP Tushar Chaturvedi -- the foursome begin to solve the mystery. Everyone in the building seem to have had a brush off with Mallika in the past.

A Whodunit with a little bit of high level office politics, good doze of humour and romance, you have Kkrishnaa's Konfessions. With several sub-plots this book could have easily left the reader confused. However, this is where script writing has come in handy. And author Smita Jain knows her job. An investment banker-turned script writer, Jain has written screenplays for both television and films. Krishnaa's observations in the form of her notes to the twists and tales of the KSK script (running parallel with the mystery), makes the narrative pacy. What also stands out in the book is Jain's candid style of writing – almost like writing one's blog. Pardon the slight overdose of the KSK plots and this will be a good one-time read. Borrow it.
