The one book all leaders must read... The Leadership Pipeline by Ram Charan, Stephen Drotter and James Noel. It focuses on the fact that at every level of leadership there are different skills and behaviours required which need to be learnt and developed. As leaders, we have to ensure that we build those different capabilities in ourselves and our managers as they move up the leadership ladder.
One book everyone in your sector should pick up...
Unfortunately the media and entertainment sector does not have too much written about it, though Vanita Kohli-Khandekar's The Indian Media Business is a very comprehensive book on the subject.
What kind of books would you normally buy while travelling?
Largely crime fiction. Elizabeth George, Minette Walters, Harlan Coben, Greg Iles are some of the crime authors whose works I enjoy reading very much.
Have you written any books? If not, do you plan to write in future?
No, I haven't written any book, though I have written a few short stories (fiction) which have appeared in magazines.
The books you grew up with? What did you like most about it? I think most people of my generation grew up on Enid Blyton and then graduated to Agatha Christie, Georgette Heyer and eventually P.G. Wodehouse. I remember the first time I went to England, everything seemed so familiar and known while there was zero emotional connection with the US. Since we have been brought up on English authors there is a sense of nostalgia with all things British! I personally think that the sense of fun and adventure an Enid Blyton could build up in our lives is unparalleled.
Your book shelf consists of....
Lots of crime fiction. There are also some Indian authors like Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Manju Kapoor, Anita Nair, Vikas Swarup along with authors such as Kazuo Ishiguro, Niall Ferguson and Bill Bryson. Where do you shop for books?
Mostly in bookstores. Landmark is my favourite, followed by Crossword.
Have your reading habits changed in the past four or five years? If so, how....
Not really. Although I keep on adding more authors to my list based on recommendations by friends, they all belong to the same genre of fiction that I enjoy reading.
One book you cherish that you received as a gift and who gave it to you?
No specific book comes to mind though I have given and received several of them as gifts! I cherish all my books, right from the old Enid Blyton's of my childhood to the latest ones. I can't bear to throw or give away any of the books that I buy even though all my bookshelves are overflowing today!
