WHAT CXOs READ

Subodh Shah, Classic Marble

What are you reading at the moment? What did you recently finish reading? What have you learnt from it?
I am very much disturbed after the recent terror attack on Mumbai. Hence I am not reading any book at the moment. Recently, I have finished reading a couple of books on management and philosophy such as The McKinsey Way by Ethan Raisel. This book covers the various experiences of the writer and his colleagues when they were working with the McKinsey. It also reflects some of the standard and helpful problem solving processes followed in the firm such as 'MECE' (Mutually Exclusive & Collectively Exhaustive) which are practically applicable. What Got You Here Won't Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith is another book that I read recently. This book is dedicated to all successful leaders who want to 'take it to the next level' and get even better. Whether you are near the top of the ladder or still have a ways to climb, this book serves as an essential guide to help you eliminate your dysfunctions and move to where you want to go.

The one book all leaders must read...
The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. This book is about building the self confidence and building on one's own strengths. Also I think a one magazine that every CEO or top management representatives should read is Leaders.

One book everyone in your sector should pick up...
Since I represent the marble industry I prefer to read magazines on interior, furnishing and home decor. etc. This keeps me updated on various new concept designs and ideas.

What kind of books would you normally buy while travelling?

I always prefer light reading while travelling. For instance, Effective Executive is a monthly magazine which provides interesting articles on interviews, debates, case studies, etc.

Have you written any books? If not, do you plan to write in future?
No. However, you never know what's in store in the future.

The books you grew up with?
I grew up reading comics such as Indrajal comics, Archies and Hardy Boys. I always liked the cartoon characters in the books.

The McKinsey WayYour book shelf consists of…
Books on management, such as The 360 Degree. Leadership, What Great Managers Do Differently, etc. and books on architecture such as Modern Architecture: A Critical History by Kenneth Frampton, Guide Of Transforming The Interior Of Your Home by Samu Mark, French Country Kitchens by Dannenberg Linda, etc.

Where do you shop for books?
I buy books from books stores on Airports and at Crossword book store

Has your reading habits changed in the past four or five years?
From last two years I hardly get any time for reading since I have been extensively travelling for business. But still I try and read whenever I get time.

One book you take pleasure in that you received as a gift...
I take pleasure in reading Indian Mythology: Tales, Symbols and Rituals from the Heart of Subcontinent by Devdutt Pattanaik. It was gifted to me by my brother-in-law.
